Antidepressants may increase people’s risk of sudden cardiac death.

\nThe medications, which are used to treat depression, anxiety, chronic pain and addiction, have been known to be “cardiotoxic” – damage the heart.

\nExperts in Denmark analysed all deaths recorded in the country in 2010, and 6,002 cases were because of sudden cardiac death – with one-third of those people have taken antidepressants.

\nThey found people – especially 30 to 39 year olds – who were taking the treatment between one and five years had a 50 per cent higher risk of dying from a heart-related issue, compared to those who do not take antidepressants.

\nHowever, those who exceed five years are putting themselves in danger by slightly over 100 per cent.

\nDespite the findings – of which “further research is warranted” – experts have stressed to those who take antidepressant to consult a medical professional before ditching the medication altogether.

\nProfessor Joanna Moncrieff, a psychiatrist at University College London, told MailOnline: “It’s another shocking example of an adverse effect that’s taken too long to come out even though we had good reason to suspect that these drugs are cardiotoxic.

\n“We know they affect the heart, they change the way the heart beats, the heart’s rhythm.

\n“It’s an adverse effect that doctors and patients haven’t been aware of enough in the past, so people need to be warned about it.”

\nDoctor Jasmin Mujkanovic, study co-author, added: “The increased risk of sudden cardiac death may be attributed to the potential adverse effects of the antidepressants.

\n“However, the exposure time to antidepressants might also serve as a marker for more severe underlying illness.

\n“Additionally, the increase could be influenced by behavioural or lifestyle factors associated with depression, such as delayed healthcare seeking, and poor cardiovascular health.

\n“Further research is warranted.”
