{"id":2829,"date":"2025-06-11T13:04:30","date_gmt":"2025-06-11T13:04:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bangbizarre.com\/index.php\/2025\/06\/11\/uber-to-trial-self-driving-taxis-in-london-next-year\/"},"modified":"2025-06-11T13:04:31","modified_gmt":"2025-06-11T13:04:31","slug":"uber-to-trial-self-driving-taxis-in-london-next-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bangbizarre.com\/index.php\/2025\/06\/11\/uber-to-trial-self-driving-taxis-in-london-next-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Uber to trial self-driving taxis in London next year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>2025-06-11 13:04:30<\/b><br \/>\n<BR>Uber will trial self-driving London taxis in Spring 2026.<BR><br \/>\nThe transport firm is teaming up with the UK tech firm Wayve to roll out bookable rides via its app in the British capital.<BR><br \/>\nMore self-driving taxis are set to be introduced when Automated Vehicles Act comes into force in late 2027.<BR><br \/>\nThe move comes after the UK Labour government recently announced a trial period of self-driving vehicles would take place in Spring 2026.<BR><br \/>\nThe Department for Transport (DfT) said  38,000 jobs, \u00a342 billion to the economy, and safer UK roads would be created because of autonomous technology.<BR><br \/>\nIn addition, it would improve accessibility for those who cannot or do not wish to drive, as well as transport options in rural areas in the UK.<BR><br \/>\nHeidi Alexander, Transport Secretary, said: \u201cThe future of transport is arriving. Self-driving cars could bring jobs, investment, and the opportunity for the UK to be among the world leaders in new technology.\u201d<BR><br \/>\nAlex Kendall, a co-founder and the chief executive of Wayve, said the accelerated trials would put the UK in a leading position for fully autonomous cars, adding: \u201cThese early pilots will help build public trust and unlock new jobs, services and markets.\u201d<BR><br \/>\nHowever, Elly Baker, Labour&#8217;s transport spokesperson in the London Assembly feared London Black Cab, as well as private taxi drivers could suffer.<BR><br \/>\nShe told The Guardian: &#8220;Although jobs might be created building and managing driverless cars, existing taxi and private hire drivers shouldn\u2019t risk being left behind.&#8221;<BR><br \/>\nSteve McNamara, the general secretary of the Licensed Taxi Drivers\u2019 Association, said the move for self-driving taxis is something out of &#8220;fantasy land&#8221;.<BR><br \/>\nHe added to the publication: &#8220;We\u2019re probably going to have flying taxis before we have autonomous ones in London.&#8221;<br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/bangbizarre.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Visit Bang Bizarre (main website) <\/a><br \/>\n<br \/><script src=\"https:\/\/geo.dailymotion.com\/player\/xtbac.js\" data-video=\"\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>2025-06-11 13:04:30 Uber will trial self-driving London taxis in Spring 2026.
