The new astronomy adviser to King Charles is convinced that aliens are real.

\nProfessor Michele Dougherty is the first woman to be the UK’s Astronomer Royal in the 350-year history of the post and has stated that she would be staggered if extraterrestrial life wasn’t present somewhere in the solar system.

\nProfessor Dougherty – who has been involved in missions hunting for signs of life on Jupiter’s moons – said: “It would be surprising if there wasn’t life in our Solar System.”

\nThe expert’s fascination with space began when she was a child and she hopes to encourage more girls to study science through her position.

\nShe said: “That was when I got my first view of Jupiter and four large moons never thinking I’d end up sending instruments on a spacecraft there.

\n“I’m having to pinch myself at the thought of it and I’m having to pinch myself at the fact that I’m now Astronomer Royal.

\n“I want to engage with the public, excite them about what we do in astronomy but also make it clear how important what we do is to the UK economy.”
