A sea lion that was found in the middle of a Californian road will be rehabilitated and “eventually” returned to the wild.

\nPointer sparked calls to the San Rafael Police Department (SRPD) on July 21 after he wandered onto Point San Pedro Road.

\nThe SRPD, firefighters from the San Rafael Fire Department (SRFD) and community members used “shields, a litter basket, and cardboard” to move the juvenile sea lion over to the nearby Point San Pedro Bay Park.

\nOnce in the park, Pointer made use of the water sprinklers.

\nThe Marine Mammal Center took custody of Pointer and discovered the animal is suffering from a bacterial infection.

\nTeams at the Marine Mammal Center will rehabilitate Pointer and will “eventually” release the sea lion back into the wild.

\nCaptioning an Instagram photo carousel of the SRPD, SRFD and community members working to move Pointer to safety, the SRPD wrote: “SRPD AND SRFD HELP RESCUE ‘POINTER’ THE SEA LION:

\n“On Saturday morning, the San Rafael Police Department began receiving phone calls about a sea lion wandering in the roadway of Point San Pedro Road.

\n“SRPD and @sanrafaelfd personnel arrived on the scene and worked to get the juvenile sea lion out of the roadway.

\n“Officers, firefighters, and community members used shields, a litter basket, and cardboard to safely corral and encourage the sea lion over to the Point San Pedro Bay Park.

\n“Once in the park, the sea lion took advantage of the sprinklers.

\n“Because the sea lion was found on Point San Pedro Road, the seal was given the name ‘Pointer’.

\n“The @themarinemammalcenter was called to the scene and took custody of ‘Pointer’.

\n“It is believed that the sea lion was suffering from a bacterial infection.

\n“The Marine Mammal Center will work to rehabilitate and eventually release \u201cPointer\u201d back into the wild.

\n“We are grateful to the community who promptly called in and kept their distance.

\n“It is important to remember that even though these animals can appear cute and friendly, they are still wild animals and can be unpredictable.

\n“We ask that if the public finds and encounters wild animals, that they not approach or corner the animal. Instead give the animal space and call for assistance. (sic)”
