The findings, published in PNAS, suggest that a physical feature most people overlook may actually offer clues about neurological development.<BR><br \/>\nThe scientists found that brain volume was most strongly associated with the proportion of the thumb relative to other fingers, rather than hand size alone. The connection is thought to reflect how genes involved in skeletal growth also play a role in brain development during early life.<BR><br \/>\nLead author Professor Philipp Gunz, of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, explained: \u201cOur results show that seemingly unrelated traits \u2013 thumb length and brain size \u2013 are connected through developmental biology.\u201d<BR><br \/>\nThe team stressed that while there is a statistical relationship, thumb length is not a reliable way to predict intelligence. Factors such as education, environment, and lifestyle remain far more influential when it comes to cognitive ability.<BR><br \/>\nThe discovery adds to growing evidence that subtle physical traits can be linked to wider aspects of human biology.
