A businessman was hospitalised with crippling stomach pain and dangerously high blood pressure after gorging on more than 6lbs of Haribo cola bottles

\nNathan Rimmington, 33, from South Yorkshire, ordered a giant \u00a318 (6.6lb) bag of cola bottle sweets to satisfy a late-night craving – but devoured the lot in just three nights, consuming an estimated 10,461 calories worth of sugar.

\nDays later, the HGV business owner collapsed at home, doubled over with agony.

\nHe is quoted by MailOnline as saying: \u201cMy stomach was in absolute agony.

\n\u201cBy Wednesday I couldn\u2019t even get out of bed – I was sweating, it was awful.\u201d

\nHe dragged himself to his doctor\u2019s surgery but was in such pain he lay on the floor of the waiting room.

\nTests showed his blood pressure was dangerously high, and he was rushed to Rotherham Hospital, where baffled medics soon discovered the unusual cause.

\nMr. Rimmington added: “They asked me what I\u2019d eaten and I said Sunday dinner.

\n“Then they said, \u2018You\u2019ve got loads of gelatine in your system, do you eat a lot of sweets?\u2019

\n“I told them I\u2019d had three kilos of cola bottles. I didn\u2019t think that was bad – they were laughing and joking about it with me.\u201d

\nDoctors diagnosed acute diverticulitis – an inflammation of the large intestine that can cause abdominal pain, fever and, in severe cases, rectal bleeding.

\nThe condition, which can be triggered by diet or infection, sometimes requires surgery, but Mr. Rimmington was treated with antibiotics and fluids through a drip.

\nHe spent six days in hospital, unable to eat or drink, before making a full recovery.

\nMr. Rimmington admitted: “It was my own stupid fault.

\n“I haven\u2019t eaten a cola bottle since. It\u2019s like PTSD – I see one now and think I\u2019m going to end up in A+E.\u201d

\nMr Rimmington said his sweet binge taught him a painful lesson: “My advice is simple \u2014 moderation. Don\u2019t go full blase and buy kilos at a time like me.\u201d
