{"id":3610,"date":"2025-11-03T15:06:35","date_gmt":"2025-11-03T15:06:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bangbizarre.com\/index.php\/2025\/11\/03\/britain-sees-huge-uptick-in-giant-jellyfish-with-230-per-cent-increase-in-2025\/"},"modified":"2025-11-03T15:06:37","modified_gmt":"2025-11-03T15:06:37","slug":"britain-sees-huge-uptick-in-giant-jellyfish-with-230-per-cent-increase-in-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bangbizarre.com\/index.php\/2025\/11\/03\/britain-sees-huge-uptick-in-giant-jellyfish-with-230-per-cent-increase-in-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Britain sees huge uptick in giant jellyfish with 230 per cent increase in 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>2025-11-03 15:06:35<\/b><br \/>\n<BR>Britain\u2019s coastline has been swarmed with jellyfish this year. <BR><br \/>\nThe Marine Conservation Society (MCS) says there\u2019s been a \u201cremarkable\u201d 230 per cent surge in sightings of the frilly-mouthed jellyfish, also known as the barrel jellyfish (Rhizostoma pulmo), which is the largest species found in UK waters.<BR><br \/>\nOver the past 12 months, 310 of the giant creatures were recorded around the UK and Ireland, compared to fewer than 100 the previous year. <BR><br \/>\nMeasuring up to the size of a dustbin lid, these gelatinous giants are often spotted drifting near beaches in late spring, especially along the Scottish and Welsh coasts.<BR><br \/>\nDespite their size, the barrel jellyfish is a \u201crelatively gentle giant\u201d, with a weak sting that poses little threat to humans.<BR><br \/>\nHowever, experts still advise caution, as even dead jellyfish can sting.<BR><br \/>\nScientists are unsure what\u2019s driving the boom, though warmer seas and shifting ocean currents are likely factors. <BR><br \/>\nRising water temperatures may be providing perfect breeding conditions, while currents push jellyfish closer to shore.<BR><br \/>\nMCS researchers say the findings highlight the jellyfish\u2019s key ecological role, moving carbon through marine food webs and acting as a natural barometer of ocean health. <BR><br \/>\nThe creatures could even help combat pollution and overfishing, as some scientists believe jellyfish could become a sustainable seafood source in the future.<BR><br \/>\nThe MCS report logged 1,327 jellyfish sightings between October 2024 and September 2025, with moon jellyfish remaining the most common at 316 reports. <BR><br \/>\nThe compass jellyfish ranked third, while sightings of the deadly Portuguese man o\u2019 war plunged by 80 per cent.<BR><br \/>\nEncouragingly, sea turtle sightings &#8211; the jellyfish\u2019s main predator &#8211; also rose, with 12 confirmed reports, including eight living leatherbacks off the southwest coast.<BR><br \/>\nExperts say the surge in sightings offers both a warning and a wonder, a vivid sign of Britain\u2019s changing seas.<br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/bangbizarre.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Visit Bang Bizarre (main website) <\/a><br \/>\n<br \/><script src=\"https:\/\/geo.dailymotion.com\/player\/xtbac.js\" data-video=\"\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>2025-11-03 15:06:35 Britain\u2019s coastline has been swarmed with jellyfish this year.
