{"id":3706,"date":"2025-11-20T11:37:12","date_gmt":"2025-11-20T11:37:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bangbizarre.com\/index.php\/2025\/11\/20\/over-half-of-british-writers-fear-ai-will-replace-them-study-shows\/"},"modified":"2025-11-20T11:37:13","modified_gmt":"2025-11-20T11:37:13","slug":"over-half-of-british-writers-fear-ai-will-replace-them-study-shows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bangbizarre.com\/index.php\/2025\/11\/20\/over-half-of-british-writers-fear-ai-will-replace-them-study-shows\/","title":{"rendered":"Over half of British writers fear AI will replace them, study shows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>2025-11-20 11:37:11<\/b><br \/>\n<BR>More than half of British novelists are concerned AI will eventually replace them.<BR><br \/>\nResearchers at the University of Cambridge surveyed 258 published authors and 74 industry professionals, revealing widespread fear that artificial intelligence could soon flood the market with mass-produced novels, leaving human writers scrambling for relevance.<BR><br \/>\nIn the study, 51 per cent of authors said they believe AI is \u201clikely to end up entirely replacing their work,\u201d while more than a third reported their income has already declined due to AI tools. <BR><br \/>\nMany foresee a grim future where human-written novels become \u201cluxury items\u201d while AI-generated fiction is pumped out cheaply &#8211; or even for free.<BR><br \/>\nReport author Dr. Clementine Collett said: \u201cThere is widespread concern from novelists that generative AI trained on vast amounts of fiction will undermine the value of writing.\u201d<BR><br \/>\nShe warned that \u201cmany novelists felt uncertain there will be an appetite for complex, long-form writing in years to come\u201d.<BR><br \/>\nAuthors are also frustrated that their own books are being used to fuel the very systems threatening their careers, as 59 per cent said they know or strongly suspect their work has been ingested into large language models without permission or compensation. <BR><br \/>\nDr. Collett called it a \u201cbrutal irony,\u201d noting that these tools are often trained on \u201cmillions of pirated novels scraped from shadow libraries\u201d.<BR><br \/>\nSome writers fear AI will flatten creativity altogether, and historical novelist Stephen May said he worries AI strips the \u201cfriction\u201d and \u201cpain\u201d from early drafts &#8211; the very struggle that gives stories emotional richness.<BR><br \/>\nMeanwhile, best-selling author Tracy Chevalier warned that a profit-driven industry may embrace AI regardless of artistic cost. <BR><br \/>\nShe said: \u201cIf it is cheaper to produce novels using AI \u2026 publishers will almost inevitably choose to publish them.\u201d<BR><br \/>\nChevalier added that readers may opt for cheaper machine-made books \u201cthe way we buy machine-made jumpers\u201d.<BR><br \/>\nDespite rising concern, the report found that 80 per cent of authors acknowledge AI\u2019s broader societal benefits, and a third already use it for basic administrative or research tasks. <BR><br \/>\nBut Dr. Collett cautioned that fiction\u2019s core purpose &#8211; to \u201cexplore and convey human complexity\u201d &#8211; remains something AI cannot replicate.<br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/bangbizarre.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Visit Bang Bizarre (main website) <\/a><br \/>\n<br \/><script src=\"https:\/\/geo.dailymotion.com\/player\/xtbac.js\" data-video=\"\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>2025-11-20 11:37:11 More than half of British novelists are concerned AI will eventually replace them.
