It turns out that brains also go through these eras.”

The first is childhood, stretching from birth to around nine, when the brain transitions into its adolescent phase — an era that lasts all the way to 32, much longer than most people imagine.

Lead researcher Alexa Mousley stressed: “We’re definitely not saying people in their late 20s act like teenagers… it’s really the pattern of change.”

At around 32, the brain hits its biggest shift and enters its full-fledged adult wiring — the longest era, spanning three decades. Then comes a turning point at 66, marking what the team calls “early ageing”, when structural changes begin to accelerate.

By 83, the brain enters its final “late ageing” era.

The findings could help pinpoint when the brain is most vulnerable to disruption, especially during adolescence — the window in which most mental health disorders first emerge.

Astle said: “Understanding these turning points will help us identify when and how its wiring is vulnerable.”

Intriguingly, some of the changes around the early 30s may be influenced by major life events like parenthood.

Mousley noted: “We know that women who give birth, their brain changes afterwards.

“It’s reasonable to assume there could be a relationship.”

Visit Bang Bizarre (main website)

2025-11-26 17:01:08 The human brain goes through five different eras.
