A poor sense of smell is linked to more than 130 diseases, a study claims.

\nDiseases include dementia, Parkinson\u2019s, chronic sinus problems and even deadly heart conditions.

\nPublished in Clinical Otolaryngology, the review argues that olfactory disorders affect around 20 per cent of the population, with even higher rates in men and people over 60.

\nThat makes loss of smell more common than profound hearing loss or blindness, yet far less studied.

\nThe leading culprit is chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) – inflammation of the sinuses often caused by asthma, allergies or cystic fibrosis.

\nInfections such as flu and rhinovirus have long caused temporary smell issues, but COVID-19 made it eight to ten times more prevalent, researchers note.

\nLoss of smell may be one of the earliest detectable signs of neurodegenerative disease.

\nA major Nature Communications study found it can precede dementia, possibly because harmful proteins begin accumulating first in the brain\u2019s smell-processing regions.

\nAnother study showed 90 per cent of Parkinson\u2019s patients experience smell loss years before motor symptoms – sometimes up to five years earlier.

\nAnd the surprises keep coming. New data link poor smell function to increased risk of stroke and heart failure, even in previously healthy adults.

\nBeyond disease prediction, smell loss messes with daily life in ways people rarely admit.

\nThose affected are more vulnerable to gas leaks, fires, spoiled food and accidental poisoning.

\nResearch also shows higher rates of eating disorders, depression, social isolation and relationship strain, with diets skewing toward sugar-rich, high-fat comfort foods that compensate for dulled flavour.

\nGiven the scale of evidence, the expert panel is calling for smell screening to become routine, and for doctors to actually be trained to take it seriously.
