To analyse one word only: the f-word, the crown jewel of global profanity.

They concluded that Americans drop “f***” the most, with Brits coming in second and Australians a surprisingly distant third.

The experts said: “The low frequency of f*** in the Australian data are surprising, as Australians are often perceived as prolific swearers.

“And swearing in public domains in the USA has been argued to be less tolerated than in Australia.”

But there’s a twist – Aussies use the most imaginative variants, from mother**** to fark and the Irish-inspired feck.

Study lead Mikko Laitinen said the team uncovered “over 2,300 different spellings of the f-word”. adding that “people’s creativity is nearly endless”.

The researchers suggest that online swearing isn’t simply about anger — it’s part of the social glue binding people together.

They explained: “Swearing fulfils various communicative functions, the most prototypical expressing the speaker’s negative emotions, especially anger, where swearing functions as a stress release.

“However, the emotions portrayed can also be positive, such as s*** when expressing surprise in response to positive news.

“Swearing can also create humorous and playful effects, or it can be used for verbal emphasis, as in, ‘That meal was f****** fantastic!'”

Visit Bang Bizarre (main website)

2025-12-10 15:28:24 Americans out-swear both Brits and Australians — though they’re nowhere near as creative with expletives as the Aussies.
