Not even Dr Seuss really had an answer.

“As an anatomist, I can’t help but wonder what the Grinch would look like on the dissection table – and what his skeleton, muscles and brain can tell us about his unique origins.”

Starting with the skull, Hyde says the Grinch would have a hybrid facial structure, combining primate and canine traits.

She explained: “Structurally, the Grinch’s facial skeleton would blend primate and canine traits: short, broad snout, high cranium and powerful jaws.”

This, she said, would allow for his exaggerated expressions, from sneers to smiles.

Meanwhile, Hyde said the Grinch’s teeth would most closely resemble a chimp’s, with sharp canines for tearing food and strong molars for grinding.

Hyde added his upper jaw would need to be “robust and slightly vaulted” to give resonance to his distinctive laugh.

The lecturer also said the Grinch’s whisker-like facial hairs, supplied by large nerve canals beneath the eyes, would function much like a cat’s whiskers – helping him detect movement while sneaking through Whoville.

As for his yellow eyes, Hyde said they are set in forward-facing sockets, suggesting a lifestyle adapted to low light.

She explained: “Many animals with yellow eyes, such as owls and cats, are adapted to low light.”

The Grinch’s posture also offers clues, as his spine would likely resemble “a cross between a gibbon and a cat – long, flexible and sinuous,” allowing him to slouch, coil and move quietly.

Hyde said she believed he would walk in a digitigrade stance, on the balls of his feet, like a cat or dog, softening his steps as he prowls on Christmas Eve.

His brain, however, may explain his antisocial behaviour.

Hyde suggested the Grinch’s frontal lobes, which control planning, impulse regulation and moral judgement, would be relatively small.

She said: “This would explain his rash decisions and lack of foresight at the start of the story.”

By contrast, regions involved in sound, memory and emotion would be highly developed.

Finally, Hyde addressed the famous line about the Grinch’s heart growing three sizes.

She said: “Biologically, such a sudden expansion would be catastrophic.”

Hyde noted it is better understood as a metaphor.

The real change, she argued, happens in the brain, not the chest.

Visit Bang Bizarre (main website)

2025-12-18 12:30:59 The Grinch is anatomically most like a chimp, a cat, a dog and an owl.
