The operations, which cost the NHS more than \u00a35 million a year, are considered a last-resort option when tablets such as Viagra, injections or mechanical devices no longer work.<BR><br \/>\nOver the past five years, 2,359 of the procedures have been carried out in NHS hospitals across England. That marks a sharp rise from the pandemic years, when just 171 were performed between April 2020 and April 2022. The year before last saw 607 operations, meaning demand has continued to climb.<BR><br \/>\nDoctors say the increase is largely driven by older men who want to maintain an active sex life but are unable to do so because of underlying health problems.<BR><br \/>\nLast year, the average age of patients was 58. However, the data also show the surgery is not limited to older age groups: four men in their 20s and 25 men in their 30s underwent the procedure, often because of serious illness or injury.<BR><br \/>\nPenis prostheses come in two main forms. One involves inserting flexible rods into the penis, which can be manually positioned when needed. The other uses an inflatable system, with a small pump placed in the scrotum that allows fluid to be transferred into the penis to create an erection.<BR><br \/>\nWhile the idea may sound extreme, specialists say the results can be life-changing.
