People who were glued to their screens were judged as colder, less intelligent and generally less likeable than those who stayed present.<BR><br \/>\nTo test the effect, researchers showed volunteers images of couples sitting together in a caf\u00e9. In some pictures, one partner was focused on their phone; in others, both were engaged with each other. The difference was stark. Participants consistently rated the phone-scrollers as significantly less warm, less competent and less appealing as social companions.<BR><br \/>\nStudy author Dr. Taeyeon Kim said: &#8220;Our results indicated that phubbing behaviour harmed perceptions of warmth and competence. This makes the phubber seem like a less attractive social partner, thereby lowering likability. That might make them less desirable social relationship partners.&#8221;<BR><br \/>\nThere were a few exceptions. Participants were more forgiving when phone use appeared necessary \u2014 such as checking a message for work or responding to something urgent. Casual, habitual scrolling, however, was seen as rude and dismissive.<BR><br \/>\nThe findings come as phone use continues to soar. Adults in the UK now spend an average of around three hours a day on their smartphones, largely on social platforms such as WhatsApp and Facebook.
