Male sexual desire may not fade as early as many assume.

\nA large international study suggests that men\u2019s libido typically reaches its highest point in middle age \u2014 not in their teenage years, but in their early forties.

\nResearchers analysing data from more than 67,000 adults aged between 20 and 84 found that men\u2019s self-reported sexual desire steadily increased through early adulthood, peaked around the age of 40, and only then began a slow decline. It was not until men reached their sixties that libido levels fell back to those typically reported by men in their twenties.

\nThe findings, published in the journal Scientific Reports, challenge the long-held belief that sexual desire is driven mainly by biology and declines in a straight line with age.

\nTestosterone levels, the primary male sex hormone, usually begin to fall from the early thirties. Yet sexual appetite showed no sign of dipping for another decade.

\nThe boffins wrote: “The mid-life peak in men suggests that factors beyond biological ageing, such as relational dynamics, may play a more significant role than initially anticipated.

\n“For example, men in their forties are more likely to be in stable long-term relationships, which have been associated with increased sexual activity and emotional intimacy.”

\nThe study was led by Dr. Toivo Aavik of the University of Tartu and drew on data from the Estonian Biobank, which has recruited more than 200,000 adults overall. Participants completed surveys rating how strong their sexual urges were and how often they thought about sex.

\nResearchers then examined how desire varied by age, gender, sexual orientation, education, family status and occupation.

\nAcross almost the entire adult lifespan, men reported higher levels of sexual desire than women, although the authors stressed that individual differences were large in both sexes.

\nSexual orientation also mattered. Bisexual participants tended to report higher-than-average desire, while education level showed an unexpected pattern: people with undergraduate degrees reported the highest desire scores, while those with postgraduate degrees reported the lowest.

\nThe authors caution that the study relied on self-reported data, which can be influenced by social attitudes. Middle-aged men may feel more comfortable acknowledging sexual urges than younger men, potentially inflating results.
