A man deliberately cut his salary by a quarter to make sure he’s actually better off.

\nMark Brown – who is a pilot, and helps run a tour guide business, Let Me Show You London, with his partner Denisa Podhrazska – has reduced his working hours by 25 percent after discovering that earning just over \u00a3100,000 would have a worse impact on his finances.

\nNow, he pulls in a net salary of \u00a370,000, which is “a lot more tax efficient”.

\nHe told the Daily Mirror newspaper: “You could see it coming because it’s been tax policy for a long time now.

\n“At some point, you’ll run into the position when you get through that barrier into a six figure salary and there’s a small window where you end up on a 62 percent tax rate.

\n\u201cIt seems daft so be giving away more money than you’re earning. I have the opportunity to take that time and invest it into our business.

\n“We have a back up and I wanted to reinvest my time rather than spend more time in my day job getting taxed.\u201d

\nThe UK government website explains that your personal allowance is reduced by \u00a31 for every \u00a32 your net income is over \u00a3100,000.

\nIf your income is \u00a3125,140 or above, you have an allowance of zero.

\nMark, 41, argued: “They’re drawing more people into this. It’s frustrating. At my age, I should be at my most productive in my career, I should be able to give as much as possible to the economy.

\n\u201cBut because there’s a punitive tax barrier there, I’m doing something else with my time. And it costs airlines a lot more to have lots of pilots on part time contracts. It just doesn’t make sense.

\n\u201cIf they had a fairer way of approaching taxation maybe there\u2019d be more people being productive and you could collect more tax to spend in the community. Perhaps they’d end up with more in the pot so more people could benefit.”
