{"id":4192,"date":"2026-03-11T13:01:48","date_gmt":"2026-03-11T13:01:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bangbizarre.com\/index.php\/2026\/03\/11\/this-fat-jab-linked-to-blindness-risk\/"},"modified":"2026-03-11T13:01:49","modified_gmt":"2026-03-11T13:01:49","slug":"this-fat-jab-linked-to-blindness-risk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bangbizarre.com\/index.php\/2026\/03\/11\/this-fat-jab-linked-to-blindness-risk\/","title":{"rendered":"This fat jab linked to blindness risk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>2026-03-11 13:01:47<\/b><br \/>\n<BR>Weight-loss jabs used by millions of slimmers could raise the risk of a rare eye condition that can cause permanent blindness.<BR><br \/>\nScientists have warned people taking Wegovy may face the highest danger of developing the debilitating condition compared with users of similar drugs.<BR><br \/>\nThe powerful injection contains semaglutide \u2013 the same active ingredient found in Ozempic \u2013 which has been hailed as a breakthrough treatment for obesity and Type 2 diabetes.<BR><br \/>\nBut scientists say the drug could also increase the risk of nonarteritic ischemic anterior optic neuropathy (NAION), sometimes dubbed an &#8220;eye stroke&#8221;.<BR><br \/>\nThe condition occurs when blood vessels supplying the optic nerve become blocked, depriving the nerve of oxygen and causing permanent damage.<BR><br \/>\nResearchers found the odds of developing the condition were five times higher in people taking Wegovy than in those using Ozempic.<BR><br \/>\nThe study also suggested men were around three times more likely than women to develop the disorder, known medically as ischaemic optic neuropathy.<BR><br \/>\nExperts from the University of Ottawa analysed reports submitted to the US Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System between 2017 and 2024.<BR><br \/>\nOut of more than 30 million safety alerts, 31,774 involved semaglutide. Around 3,070 were linked to Wegovy and more than 20,000 were associated with Ozempic.<BR><br \/>\nDespite fewer reports overall, Wegovy showed the strongest link to the eye condition.<BR><br \/>\nWriting in the British Journal of Ophthalmology, the researchers said the findings &#8220;highlight a potential dose-dependent safety concern&#8221; linked to semaglutide.<BR><br \/>\nThey added: &#8220;Overall, ION risk appears dose and formulation dependent, and highest with Wegovy.&#8221;<BR><br \/>\nInterestingly, the once-daily semaglutide tablet Rybelsus was not linked to the condition. <BR><br \/>\nExperts believe this could be due to the drug\u2019s slower absorption compared with injectable versions.<BR><br \/>\nPharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk, which makes all three medications, said patient safety remains its &#8220;top priority&#8221;.<BR><br \/>\nA spokesperson said: &#8220;We take any reports about adverse events from the use of our medicines very seriously.&#8221;<BR><br \/>\nThe firm added that safety leaflets across the UK and EU have now been updated to include the risk of NAION.<BR><br \/>\nThe condition affects about one in 10,000 people and there is currently no treatment.
