A top meteorologist is warning humanity faces \u201cabsolute extinction\u201d if fossil fuel use is not urgently reduced.

\nCiting accelerating climate instability and rising global temperatures as huge risks to Earth\u2019s population, Jim Dale, a meteorological expert at British Weather Services, issued the alert following new data from the World Meteorological Organization, which found the Earth\u2019s climate system is now more imbalanced than at any point in recorded history. According to the United Nations agency, 2025 ranked among the three hottest years on record, with global average temperatures reaching approximately 1.43C above the pre-industrial baseline.

\nScientists say this brings the world closer to breaching the critical 1.5C threshold, beyond which increasingly severe climate impacts are expected.

\nThe report also highlighted record concentrations of greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide, driven largely by continued fossil fuel use.

\nJim told the Daily Mirror: \u201cThe big story is what the WMO has come out with, which is the world\u2019s energy imbalance, and temperatures at the highest for 125,000 years; particularly ocean temperatures.

\n\u201cThat points to extinction. And I don\u2019t say that lightly. I say it in absolute terms. I\u2019m saying, if things continue unabated as they are, then we are facing, as a human race, potential extinction.\u201d

\nThe World Meteorological Organization reported 2025 was marked by extreme weather events, including intense heatwaves, widespread wildfires, hurricanes, flooding and heavy rainfall.

\nIn the UK alone, a record number of summer wildfires were recorded, while major tourist destinations including Greece and Turkey were forced to close airports due to uncontrolled fires.

\nElsewhere, the Atlantic hurricane season produced three Category 5 storms \u2013 only the second time on record \u2013 with Hurricane Melissa causing widespread devastation across Jamaica and Cuba, killing nearly 100 people and causing an estimated \u00a36.5 billion in damage.

\nFlooding across India and Pakistan killed close to 2,000 people in June 2025, while heavy rainfall in July displaced around 80,000 residents in Beijing.

\nScientists have also forecast a potential El Ni\u00f1o event later this year, a warming of Pacific Ocean surface temperatures that could intensify global heating and potentially make 2027 the hottest year recorded.

\nJim added: \u201cWhat\u2019s going to happen with El Nino? That will kick on during the course of this summer into the winter. Once that kicks in… you\u2019ve already seen what\u2019s going on in the United States with massive temperatures; 5C above record temperatures in places like Arizona.

\n\u201cIt\u2019s in March… this is March. It isn\u2019t July. It\u2019s just completely out of kilter.\u201d

\nThe expert added: \u201cIf we don\u2019t get hold of it, then we\u2019re going to be in serious trouble. And although we\u2019re protected to a degree in the temperate world we live in, it\u2019s just a one-way street. Things will get worse and worse. That\u2019s the big story.

\n\u201cYour children and your grandchildren are going to face a real terrible future if we don\u2019t get on top of fossil fuel use and thereby temperatures.

\n\u201cBut that\u2019s going to take a huge, colossal move \u2013 a bit like dragging the Titanic up from the seabed \u2013\u00a0but we\u2019ve got to drag it up and turn it around and that might do something.

\n\u201cWe\u2019re at the beginning of it, and in the end it\u2019ll be major catastrophes \u2013\u00a0more than we\u2019ve seen. That\u2019s the thing that will tip the balance and people\u2019s realisation, a bit like a war coming to them.

\n\u201cIt sounds like I\u2019m preaching the Armageddon. And to be frank with you, to a certain degree, I am. Unless things can turn around. If we don\u2019t get our act together.\u201d
