{"id":4328,"date":"2026-04-09T12:59:15","date_gmt":"2026-04-09T12:59:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bangbizarre.com\/index.php\/2026\/04\/09\/single-jab-could-be-functional-cure-for-type-1-diabetes\/"},"modified":"2026-04-09T12:59:17","modified_gmt":"2026-04-09T12:59:17","slug":"single-jab-could-be-functional-cure-for-type-1-diabetes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bangbizarre.com\/index.php\/2026\/04\/09\/single-jab-could-be-functional-cure-for-type-1-diabetes\/","title":{"rendered":"Single jab could be \u2018functional cure\u2019 for type 1 diabetes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>2026-04-09 12:59:15<\/b><br \/>\n<BR>A revolutionary one-off jab hailed as a potential \u201cfunctional cure\u201d for type 1 diabetes is set to be trialled in humans this year.<BR><br \/>\nThe groundbreaking treatment could allow patients to ditch daily insulin injections by turning their own muscles into long-term insulin producers.<BR><br \/>\nIn a world-first study, adults with type 1 diabetes will be given a gene therapy known as KRIYA-839, which delivers genetic instructions to muscle cells \u2013 effectively transforming them into mini insulin factories.<BR><br \/>\nDr Partha Kar, NHS England\u2019s national speciality adviser for diabetes, said: \u201cIf it works, it could help a lot of people.<BR><br \/>\n\u201cI see it as positive\u2026 I certainly would be keeping a very close eye on this.\u201d<BR><br \/>\nHe added the approach is \u201creally exciting\u201d and could act as a \u201cfunctional cure\u201d.<BR><br \/>\nType 1 diabetes affects around 464,000 people in the UK and occurs when the immune system destroys insulin-producing cells, leaving patients reliant on injections or pumps to survive.<BR><br \/>\nBut this new therapy aims to bypass the pancreas entirely.<BR><br \/>\nAfter a single injection into the thigh, muscle cells could begin producing insulin and other key proteins to regulate blood sugar \u2013 potentially for years or even decades.<BR><br \/>\nEarly animal studies suggest the effects could last up to four years without ongoing treatment.<BR><br \/>\nJeremy Pettus, an endocrinologist at the University of California, said: \u201cIt\u2019s very exciting to stand here and say that this is actually something that&#8217;s in the works and happening now.\u201d<BR><br \/>\nPatients in the trial will receive injections in both thighs during a single outpatient visit, with full effects expected within two to three months.<BR><br \/>\nExperts stress it is not a cure just yet.<BR><br \/>\nTadej Battelino, head of endocrinology at UCH-UMC Ljubljana, said: \u201cI\u2019m not saying it\u2019s a cure, but a functional cure, for sure.\u201d<BR><br \/>\nDr Kar added even partial success could be life-changing.<BR><br \/>\nHe said: \u201cIf you&#8217;re saying, \u2018Hey, listen, we can reproduce 75 per cent of your need of insulin\u2019, then you probably would be like, \u2018wow, that&#8217;s a big thing.'&#8221;<BR><br \/>\nIf successful, the jab could transform diabetes care &#8211; replacing daily management with a single breakthrough treatment.<br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/bangbizarre.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Visit Bang Bizarre (main website) <\/a><br \/>\n<br \/><script src=\"https:\/\/geo.dailymotion.com\/player\/xtbac.js\" data-video=\"\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>2026-04-09 12:59:15 A revolutionary one-off jab hailed as a potential \u201cfunctional cure\u201d for type 1 diabetes is set to be trialled in humans this year.
