{"id":4335,"date":"2026-04-10T11:59:18","date_gmt":"2026-04-10T11:59:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bangbizarre.com\/index.php\/2026\/04\/10\/new-tarantula-discovered-with-massive-male-parts\/"},"modified":"2026-04-10T11:59:19","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T11:59:19","slug":"new-tarantula-discovered-with-massive-male-parts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bangbizarre.com\/index.php\/2026\/04\/10\/new-tarantula-discovered-with-massive-male-parts\/","title":{"rendered":"New tarantula discovered with \u2018massive\u2019 male parts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>2026-04-10 11:59:17<\/b><br \/>\n<BR>Scientists have discovered a brand\u2011new type of tarantula \u2014 and the males are already causing a stir thanks to their oversized reproductive gear.<BR><br \/>\nThe spiders, now officially placed in a new genus called Satyrex, live across the Arabian Peninsula and the Horn of Africa. <BR><br \/>\nResearchers say the males have the longest palps ever recorded in tarantulas \u2014 specialised appendages used to transfer sperm \u2014 and they\u2019re so large they had to create a whole new genus just to classify them.<BR><br \/>\nFour species have been identified so far, including the biggest, Satyrex ferox, which has a 14cm leg span and a palp that can reach 5cm. That\u2019s nearly four times longer than the front of its body and almost as long as its legs. In short: these spiders are extremely well\u2011equipped.<BR><br \/>\nDr Alireza Zamani of the University of Turku, who led the research, said the spiders were so unusual that scientists had no choice but to give them their own category. <BR><br \/>\nThe name Satyrex combines \u201cSatyr\u201d \u2014 the famously well\u2011endowed creature from Greek mythology \u2014 with the Latin word for \u201cking.\u201d<BR><br \/>\nThe species ferox (\u201cfierce\u201d) earned its name thanks to its attitude.<BR><br \/>\nAt the slightest disturbance, it rears up, raises its front legs and even hisses, making it one of the most aggressive tarantulas ever documented.<BR><br \/>\nScientists think the males\u2019 extra\u2011long palps may have evolved as a survival tactic, allowing them to keep a safe distance during mating \u2014 because the females are so aggressive they might try to eat them.<br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/bangbizarre.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Visit Bang Bizarre (main website) <\/a><br \/>\n<br \/><script src=\"https:\/\/geo.dailymotion.com\/player\/xtbac.js\" data-video=\"\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>2026-04-10 11:59:17 Scientists have discovered a brand\u2011new type of tarantula \u2014 and the males are already causing a stir thanks to their oversized reproductive gear.
