incidents spike in UK during warmer weather"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>2026-07-21 12:02:00<\/b><br \/>\n<BR>Britons have been urged to stay alert as snake incidents soar during the summer months, with the RSPCA warning that hot weather is triggering a spike in escaped reptiles.<BR><br \/>\nAs the UK experiences its third heatwave of the year, the animal welfare charity revealed it has already received 1,485 reports involving snakes in 2025, up sharply from 980 last year.<BR><br \/>\nOf those incidents, 905 occurred between May and September, when higher temperatures make snakes more active.<BR><br \/>\nAround one in five reports involved snakes found loose or wandering, while others concerned sick or injured pets, trapped reptiles and cases of intentional harm.<BR><br \/>\nRSPCA Senior Scientific Officer Evie Button said: &#8220;We&#8217;re seeing a significant increase in reports involving snakes, with the highest numbers consistently taking place during the warmer months.<BR><br \/>\n&#8220;Snakes naturally become more active as temperatures increase and they are very skilled escape artists so we&#8217;re urging owners to take a few extra moments to check enclosures are secure and suitable for their particular species.<BR><br \/>\n&#8220;With such hot temperatures on the horizon, we&#8217;re issuing this snake safety warning.<BR><br \/>\n&#8220;Many of the incidents we deal with involve snakes that are believed to have escaped from their owners.&#8221;<BR><br \/>\nThe charity says one common mistake is taking pet snakes outdoors to enjoy natural sunshine without properly securing them.<BR><br \/>\nWhile sunlight can benefit reptiles, the extra warmth allows them to become much more active, increasing the chance they will slither away.<BR><br \/>\nThe RSPCA also receives a rise in reports about Britain&#8217;s native snakes, including grass snakes and adders, which are often mistaken for escaped exotic pets during the warmer months.<BR><br \/>\nButton said: &#8220;Exotic pets such as snakes often end up in the RSPCA&#8217;s care after people realise they&#8217;re not easy to care for, or the novelty wears off.<BR><br \/>\n&#8220;Pet snakes are completely dependent on their owners to provide the right accommodation, heating, lighting and diet, all of which need to replicate their natural habitat as closely as possible to keep them healthy and allow them to express their natural behaviours.<BR><br \/>\n&#8220;People should only consider keeping a snake if they can ensure they are fully able to provide for these needs.&#8221;<br
