{"id":4841,"date":"2026-07-21T12:23:34","date_gmt":"2026-07-21T12:23:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bangbizarre.com\/index.php\/2026\/07\/21\/brits-face-750-fines-for-dropping-crisp-packets\/"},"modified":"2026-07-21T12:23:36","modified_gmt":"2026-07-21T12:23:36","slug":"brits-face-750-fines-for-dropping-crisp-packets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bangbizarre.com\/index.php\/2026\/07\/21\/brits-face-750-fines-for-dropping-crisp-packets\/","title":{"rendered":"Brits face \u00a3750 fines for dropping crisp packets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>2026-07-21 12:23:33<\/b><br \/>\n<BR>Brits caught dropping a crisp packet or other litter could soon be hit with on-the-spot fines of up to \u00a3750 under a major government crackdown on waste crime.<BR><br \/>\nMinisters are increasing the maximum fixed penalty for littering by 50 per cent this summer, while fly-tippers face fines of up to \u00a35,000, five times the current limit.<BR><br \/>\nThe tougher penalties form part of Labour&#8217;s new Waste Crime Action Plan, which aims to tackle rubbish blighting streets, parks and rural beauty spots.<BR><br \/>\nThe Government is also looking to emulate Japan, where littering is socially frowned upon and many people routinely take their rubbish home.<BR><br \/>\nEnvironment Secretary Emma Reynolds told The Sun newspaper: &#8220;Fly-tipping and littering is a disgrace that blights local communities.<BR><br \/>\n&#8220;Under this government, criminals who break the rules will face heftier fines to clean up the mess they make.<BR><br \/>\n&#8220;We are sending a clear message to those who dump their rubbish \u2013 we are coming after you and you will pay the price.\u201d<BR><br \/>\nLocal councils will be able to issue the larger fixed penalty notices, with the size of the fine reflecting the seriousness of the offence.<BR><br \/>\nThe crackdown also includes a new digital waste tracking system designed to monitor rubbish from collection through to disposal, making it harder for rogue operators to dump waste illegally.<BR><br \/>\nMinisters have also strengthened powers allowing convicted fly-tippers to lose their waste licences, while tougher background checks aim to stop repeat offenders setting up new waste businesses.<BR><br \/>\nFresh guidance has also been issued to councils on seizing vehicles used for illegal dumping and bringing offenders before the courts.<BR><br \/>\nThe Local Government Association welcomed the tougher penalties but warned stronger court sentences are also needed.<BR><br \/>\nCllr Arooj Shah, Chair of the LGA Neighbourhoods Committee, told the publication: &#8220;Increasing the maximum fixed penalty notices available to councils is a positive step and will give local authorities greater flexibility to tackle littering and fly-tipping in their communities.<BR><br \/>\n&#8220;However, this should be accompanied by a review of sentencing guidelines.
