They include ready meals, processed meats, ice cream, sliced bread, breakfast cereals, crisps and sugary drinks.

However, several nutrition experts warned that the findings should be interpreted with caution.

Professor Gunter Kuhnle, of the University of Reading, said: “This modelling study is based on the assumption that so-called ultra-processed food consumption increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

“However, there is very little reliable evidence that this is the case.”

Professor Alberto Fiore, of Abertay University, added: “This is a modelling study, not a clinical trial — it does not measure what actually happened to people who ate more or fewer ultra-processed foods.”

He argued the real culprit may simply be diets high in sugar, saturated fat and salt rather than industrial food processing itself, noting that sugary drinks and processed meats were responsible for much of the estimated risk.

Visit Bang Bizarre (main website)

2026-07-21 12:26:52 Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) could be responsible for up to a quarter of heart disease cases and deaths, according to a new study.
