{"id":4910,"date":"2026-07-30T13:06:50","date_gmt":"2026-07-30T13:06:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bangbizarre.com\/index.php\/2026\/07\/30\/two-headed-gecko-beats-the-odds-after-surviving-first-month\/"},"modified":"2026-07-30T13:06:52","modified_gmt":"2026-07-30T13:06:52","slug":"two-headed-gecko-beats-the-odds-after-surviving-first-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bangbizarre.com\/index.php\/2026\/07\/30\/two-headed-gecko-beats-the-odds-after-surviving-first-month\/","title":{"rendered":"Two-headed gecko beats the odds after surviving first month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>2026-07-30 13:06:50<\/b><br \/>\n<BR>A remarkable two-headed gecko has defied expectations by surviving its first four weeks, leaving even experienced reptile breeders astonished.<BR><br \/>\nThe tiny crested gecko, named Simon and Garfunkel, hatched unexpectedly in Pennsylvania in late June with two fully formed heads &#8211; a condition so rare that only a handful of similar cases have ever been documented.<BR><br \/>\nProfessional breeders initially feared the hatchling would not survive, but the unusual reptile has continued to grow, with both heads eating normally.<BR><br \/>\nIts owners, the husband-and-wife team behind Rockstar Geckos, said: \u201cThey\u2019re doing great.\u201d<BR><br \/>\nThe pair revealed the gecko now weighs just 1.8 grams and is gradually becoming more coordinated.<BR><br \/>\nSharing the latest update online, they wrote: \u201cHere they are at 4 weeks old!<BR><br \/>\n\u201cI chose these photos specifically to show just how tiny they still are, only 1.8 grams.<BR><br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s hard to grasp until you see them next to a fingernail.\u201d<BR><br \/>\nThe breeders say neither head has become dominant and, thanks to the way they are positioned, they cannot reach or bite each other &#8211; improving the reptile&#8217;s chances of survival.<BR><br \/>\nThey have considered carrying out X-rays to better understand the gecko&#8217;s anatomy but are weighing up whether the potential benefits justify the stress of handling such a tiny animal.<BR><br \/>\nSimon and Garfunkel were born with dicephaly, an extremely rare developmental condition in which an animal develops two heads.<BR><br \/>\nA scientific review published in 2010 found only four documented cases of dicephalism across three lizard families, including geckos.<BR><br \/>\nThe hatchling weighed just under two grams when it emerged from an egg that appeared completely normal.<BR><br \/>\nRockstar Geckos previously said: \u201cWe were definitely very surprised. Nothing seemed different about this egg at all.\u201d<BR><br \/>\nThe following day, Simon and Garfunkel successfully shed their skin without assistance before moving into a specially adapted enclosure designed to make food easier to reach.<BR><br \/>\nWhile healthy crested geckos can live between 15 and 20 years in captivity, there is no established life expectancy for a two-headed hatchling.<BR><br \/>\nThe extraordinary reptile has also become an online sensation.<BR><br \/>\nOne fan wrote: \u201cYay! Such good news! I have been wondering how they are doing. They look like they are thriving!\u201d<BR><br \/>\nAnother added: \u201cMy god this is so incredible.
