{"id":5024,"date":"2026-08-25T13:12:47","date_gmt":"2026-08-25T13:12:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bangbizarre.com\/index.php\/2026\/08\/25\/fizzy-drink-a-day-may-double-cancer-risk\/"},"modified":"2026-08-25T13:12:50","modified_gmt":"2026-08-25T13:12:50","slug":"fizzy-drink-a-day-may-double-cancer-risk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bangbizarre.com\/index.php\/2026\/08\/25\/fizzy-drink-a-day-may-double-cancer-risk\/","title":{"rendered":"Fizzy drink a day may double cancer risk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>2026-08-25 13:12:47<\/b><br \/>\n<BR>Drinking just one sugary fizzy drink a day could more than double the risk of stomach cancer, research suggests.<BR><br \/>\nScientists found people who consumed at least one sugar-sweetened drink daily were 2.45 times more likely to develop the disease than those who rarely drank them.<BR><br \/>\nThe study tracked 112,284 people over several decades, monitoring their consumption of regular fizzy drinks, punches, lemonades and sports drinks.<BR><br \/>\nOf those taking part, 278 eventually developed stomach cancer, including 140 women and 138 men.<BR><br \/>\nThe increased risk was particularly striking among women, who were three times more likely to develop the disease if they drank sugary fizzy drinks every day.<BR><br \/>\nFor men, the risk was twice as high.<BR><br \/>\nHowever, people who enjoyed a fizzy drink only a few times a month or week did not appear to face a meaningful increase in risk.<BR><br \/>\nResearchers, writing in Gastro Help Advances, also found higher consumption of fructose, a sugar naturally found in fruit and commonly added to soft drinks, was associated with greater stomach cancer risk.<BR><br \/>\nThey could not establish whether fructose itself was responsible.<BR><br \/>\nArtificially sweetened drinks, meanwhile, were not linked to an increased risk of stomach cancer, although scientists cautioned that evidence around artificial sweeteners is still evolving.<BR><br \/>\nThe reason sugary drinks might be linked to the disease is also unclear.<BR><br \/>\nResearchers suggested possible explanations could include weight gain, insulin problems, hormonal changes, inflammation or disruption to the bacteria living in the gut.<BR><br \/>\nStomach cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death worldwide, with around 6,800 new cases diagnosed in the UK each year.<BR><br \/>\nKnown risk factors include smoking, heavy alcohol consumption and certain stomach conditions, including gastritis and severe acid reflux.<BR><br \/>\nCrucially, the latest study was observational, meaning it can identify an association but cannot prove sugary drinks cause stomach cancer.<BR><br \/>\nThe researchers said further work is needed to understand the relationship.<BR><br \/>\nThey also noted that the findings should not be interpreted as evidence that occasional fizzy drinks are dangerous, with the increased risk appearing among those who consumed sugary beverages daily.<BR><br \/>\nThe study adds to previous research linking fizzy drinks with other health problems, including liver cancer, while highlighting the need for more research into how high levels of added sugar may affect the body.<br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/bangbizarre.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Visit Bang Bizarre (main website) <\/a><br \/>\n<br \/><script src=\"https:\/\/geo.dailymotion.com\/player\/xtbac.js\" data-video=\"\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>2026-08-25 13:12:47 Drinking just one sugary fizzy drink a day could more than double the risk of stomach cancer, research suggests.
