A wild elephant left shoppers stunned after bursting into a local grocery store, demolishing a selection of snacks and a trail of astonished onlookers.

The 25-year-old male elephant, a familiar figure in the vicinity of Khao Yai National Park, ventured into the store on Monday afternoon. Despite the low ceiling causing a brief snag, the animal managed to navigate the aisles, helping himself to sweet, crispy rice cakes and chicken eggs. Store owner Khamploy Gakaew recounted the incident, noting her surprise at the elephant’s preference for sweet treats over the typically favored salty options.

“This was the first time an elephant had visited the store,” Gakaew remarked. “I hope he doesn’t come back. I was worried about the damage he could cause.”

While elephants occasionally approach street vendors in the area, such a direct intrusion into a store is considered highly unusual. The incident underscores the ongoing interactions between wildlife and human habitats in regions bordering national parks.

The elephant’s visit resulted in minimal damage, estimated at around 1,000 baht (£22.70), but left a lasting impression on the community. As urban development continues to encroach upon natural habitats, such encounters may become more frequent, highlighting the need for effective wildlife management strategies.

For now, residents are left with a memorable story of the day an elephant decided to do a bit of shopping.
