Climate change could be contributing to obesity.

New research has claimed that people are more likely to pile on the pounds during warmer weather as they gorge on ice cream and consume fizzy drinks in an attempt to stay cool and hydrated.

At temperatures between 12C and 30C, individuals consume 0.7 grams more sugar per day for each degree hotter it gets – meaning they eat over two teaspoons more sugar when the mercury climbs to 25C.

Dr. Pan He, lead researcher at Cardiff University, says there are two main reasons why the hotter weather raises sugar intake.

She told the Daily Mail: “First, higher temperatures would facilitate metabolism and lead to higher demand of hydration. If one is used to using sweetened beverages to hydrate themselves, then this would become a problem.

“Second, one may use frozen food and drinks to physically cool down, and many of these products have added sugar, such as frozen yoghurt and ice cream.”
