A Mediterranean-style diet could hold the key to a better sex life.
Scientists in China have found that people who follow the diet — rich in olive oil, nuts, lean proteins, and plenty of fruit and vegetables — have stronger pelvic floors and better sexual function.
The findings, published in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition, are based on data from 31 studies examining the link between diet and pelvic floor health. The researchers discovered that anti-inflammatory diets like the Mediterranean diet were linked with improved sexual health and reduced incontinence, while pro-inflammatory diets — high in refined carbs, saturated fats, and processed foods — increased the risk of pelvic floor dysfunction.
Pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) covers conditions caused by weak or damaged pelvic muscles, including incontinence and sexual issues.
The study also revealed that the Mediterranean diet may directly boost endothelial nitric oxide production, which improves blood flow and muscle strength.
Co-author Professor Min Li said: “The Mediterranean diet’s unique composition — rich in olive oil, nuts, and polyphenols — also directly improves endothelial nitric oxide production.
“This dual mechanism explains why its impact on sexual health may be greater than that predicted by general anti-inflammatory indices.”
