The Los Angeles Rams poured cayenne pepper into their socks in a bid to keep warm on the pitch last weekend.

The California side turned out in the snow to face Chicago Bears at Soldier Field and took a variety of measures to protect against the cold.

Speaking during Sunday Night Football, NBC’s Melissa Stark said: “The Rams traveled with over 2,000 pounds of cold weather gear, including wetsuits, thermal layers and capes. They have plenty of hot chocolate and chicken broth down here on the sideline.

“Get this, some of the Rams have put cayenne pepper in their socks … I’m told it brings heat and keeps the blood flowing.”

Rams’ Poona Ford showed off his orange-stained socks in the locker room and explained he had received the idea from NFL veteran Al Woods.

He told ESPN: “When it gets cold, like we played up in Green Bay one year. And just cold games like this one. … It helps.”

The tactic seemed to work because the Rams beat the Bears 20-17.
