A couple adopted a ‘sausage dog’ but they weren’t prepared for what it grew into.
The dog loving couple adopted dachshund Mochi from a rescue centre, and bought what they thought were an appropriately sized bed, collar and toys to make her more comfortable at their home.
However, the pair noticed something wasn’t quite right as their dog continued to grow over the next few months.
On the @dogsofdancr Instagram account, they wrote: “We thought she was a weenie dog. We had decided to go to the pound to look for dogs.
“We knew we needed a small one and she just sat there sweet and quiet, and she looked just like a weenie dog puppy.”
In the video, she can be seen fully grown and considerably larger than your average sausage dog.
The owners quipped: “Little did we know we got this gorgeous grown-up baby girl dog.”
She’s believed to actually be a crossbreed, although it’s impossible to say for sure what her breed mix is without a DNA test.
One social media follower commented: “She’s long but not in proportion to be a ween. Head shape, tail and legs are way too different. Sorry but I didn’t see it.”
While another user wrote: “She is adorable, and whoever adopted her is very lucky. I’m a cat lady, and for the last five minutes I cannot stop smiling.”
There has been a long held belief that crossbreeds are healthier than pedigrees, but RVD research has debunked the myth.
Dr Rowena Packer, Senior Lecturer in Companion Animal Behaviour and Welfare Science at the RVC, has said: “This study has demonstrated that although the health of designer Poodle crosses is no worse than their parent breeds’, it is also no better.
“This means that owners should still be strongly focused on purchasing from breeders who prioritise health and temperament over looks in their breeding decisions, and not assume their puppy will automatically be healthy due to being a crossbreed.”
