An amateur cricketer has gone viral for clicking his fingers during a game.

Brian Devine has been nicknamed Clicky Ponting, in reference to former Australia captain Ricky Ponting, after he was seemingly caught on camera clicking his fingers, in an effort to kid the umpire into thinking that the opposition batter had edged the ball.

In various videos, Devine is seen snapping his fingers as the ball passes the edge of the bat, before appealing to the umpire.

One captain of a rival team told The Sun newspaper: “It’s clear what’s been happening and it’s not confined to one game.

“I was at the other end when one of our players was dismissed, but our batsman was adamant he was nowhere near the ball.

“We had three given out caught behind that day, and all of them said they hadn’t touched the ball.”

The videos have caused an online controversy, with Piers Morgan, a keen cricket fan, weighing in on the debate.

In response to one of the videos, Morgan said on X: “Outrageous cheating, and just the tip of the iceberg from all that’s come out since it was exposed. Clicky Ponting (as he is now known) and various teammates at Saltburn CC, have clearly been at this shameful scam for years. Imagine doing this in local amateur cricket? Pathetic.”

In response to another clip, Morgan described Devine as the “biggest cheat in cricket history”.

The outspoken star wrote on the micro-blogging platform: “Unbelievable. Clicky Ponting must be the biggest cheat in cricket history. How long has he been doing this? How many batsmen’s days has he ruined?”

On the other hand, some social media users have suggested that the reaction has been over the top.

One fan wrote: “It’s an amateur cricket match. This bloke is being treated like he’s Pol Pot. I fear for his mental health. It’s extraordinary.”

Devine, Saltburn CC, his club, and Norton CC, the opposition team, haven’t made any public comments.
