The UK’s most haunted hotels have been revealed.

The country’s spookiest stays have been named in a new list compiled by Conde Nast Traveller magazine which reveals tourists can scare themselves at venues all over Britain including an inn haunted by ghostly smugglers, a country hotel which is said to host the spectre of a tragic farmer and a creepy monk at a site in Stratford-upon-Avon.

The list reads: “From creaky pubs with rooms to former smuggling sites in which many met their untimely demise, there are plenty of haunted hotels in the UK where it’s not unusual for things to go bump in the night.

“While some guests saunter to breakfast, unsure whether their minds were playing tricks on them during the witching hour, other travellers report more vivid experiences and witness inexplicable phenomena that prompt them to hurriedly pack their luggage before sunrise.

“Here, we highlight some of the most famous haunted hotels across the land. Sleep tight, if you can.”

First up is the The Mermaid Inn in Rye which is said to have a room blighted by an eery cold and a chair which rocks of its own accord while previous guests have also reported seeing the ghost of a man sitting on a bed and a woman in white who was spotted sitting by the fireplace in room one.

Another haunted hotel is named as Jamaica Inn, which overlooks Bodmin Moor in Cornwall, and was made famous by Daphne du Maurier’s novel of the same name.

The venue is said to be plagued by disembodied footsteps, rolling barrels, and child ghosts.

The Witchery by the Castle is a historic hotel in Edinburgh, Scotland and is located just metres away from the Castle Esplanade and The Witches Well, where more than 300 victims were executed on charges of witchcraft.

In Kent, tourists can stay at the lvey Farm Country Hotel in Pluckley, which is said to be haunted by the ghost of a tragic farmer, who took his own life in the dairy of the estate back in 1990 and now wanders the corridors and whispers to guests.

Another haunt to tick off the bucket list is the Ettington Park Hotel in Stratford-upon-Avon which is said to be patrolled by the spectre of a woman in Victorian clothing as well as a spooky monk.
