A Loch Ness Monster hunter is convinced sightings by tourists are likely to be “false alarms”.

Steve Feltham, who lives on Loch Ness and devotes his time to hunting the elusive creature, has admitted he doesn’t pay much attention to the Official Loch Ness Monster Sightings Register which publishes reports from the Scottish lake because he’s convinced most visitors to the loch don’t have enough “experience” to know if what they’ve seen is real.

During an appearance on NewsNation, Steve was asked about the recent surge in sightings reported to the register and he said: “I don’t pay too much attention to the register of sightings, I’ve had a look at what they’ve got on there and there’s about 16 reported for this year and none of those are things that I would get excited by.

“I get excited by certainly, sonar contacts on boats. We gets contacts with things that are the size of a truck in mid-water that defy explanation.

“That sort of thing is impressive. Or an eyewitness that has some experience of Loch Ness and is saying: ‘I’ve just seen something massive swimming about in that water’.

“Because of what I do, sitting on the beach trying to spot a monster, people come and report things to me and so I act as a sort of filter I suppose, trying to keep the good, the bad and the indifferent evidence [separate] and only trying to let the good evidence go out into the public domain.

“That’s sort of part of my job.”

However, Steve is convinced the monster is still out there, saying: “100 per cent. I’ve dedicated my life to this mystery, trying to find the answers. And I suppose part of what I do is also disproving the things that are false alarms … “

He added: “I’ve always said that the existence of Nessie does not sink or swim upon the opinion of any one person. It’s not up to any one person to decide.

“Some people look at all the evidence and conclude there is something to be explained. Some people look at it and say there’s not. That makes no difference to Nessie’s existence.”
