Eating bananas can cut the risk of heart disease and early death.
A new study has found that foods rich in potassium – including bananas, broccoli and spinach – enables the body to eliminate salt from your system.
In the study, researchers investigated whether removing excess sodium from the bloodstream – which is known to raise the risk of cardiovascular disease – could help lower the danger.
The boffins reached to conclusion that higher potassium levels in the blood were linked to a reduced risk of heart events, hospital stays or death from any cause.
Professor Henning Bundgaard, lead author of the study at Copenhagen University Hospital, told The Guardian newspaper: “With a broader view we can say that higher dietary intake of potassium may not only benefit patients with heart disease but probably all of us, so maybe we should all reduce sodium and increase potassium content in our food.”
