A woman was left stunned after tearing down a false wall in her basement and uncovering a colourful mural hidden for decades.

The homeowner, from Kenmore, Buffalo, was remodelling her 1926-built house when she pulled away a grey particle board and discovered the artwork.

She shared the find on Reddit and wrote: “My house was built in 1926 in Kenmore, Buffalo. We are wondering when it was done, and wanted to share it to see if anyone else has stumbled upon crazy artwork while uncovering walls.”

The mural shows a man riding a donkey away from a couple and towards three other figures, several of whom are wearing sombreros.

The unusual mural has turned the woman’s basement project into an unlikely talking point, with users praising it as a rare and entertaining reminder of the stories old houses can tell.

One amused commenter said it “looks like it belongs in a Mexican restaurant”.

Another Reddit user, who had inspected many old Buffalo homes, said: “I’ve seen many old Buffalo houses where the basements were once used for under-the-table businesses.

“The coolest were three Black-owned hair salons from the ’50s and ’60s — one was totally untouched because the granddaughter inherited the house, and even the magazines were still on the coffee table. But how cool would it be if your basement was a secret under-the-table Mexican restaurant!”

Others were intrigued by the artwork’s age and style, with one writing: “Maybe drop the history museum a message. They might be able to give you some information about the neighbourhood or point you in the right direction.”

Several simply enjoyed the quirky nature of the find.

One joked: “This is way better than finding mould or pipes behind a wall.”

While another enthusiast added: “Imagine living with that hidden all these years — and now it’s the best feature of your house.”
