Antihistamines could cause weight gain, experts have warned.
Around one in four Brits battle Hay Fever – a seasonal allergy – with symptoms like sneezing, itchy eyes and blocked sinuses driving millions to rely on tablets for relief.
But according to a General Practitioner (GP), those same pills could be quietly increasing appetite.
Dr Crystal Wyllie, from ZAVA Online Doctor, said: “Histamine actually helps suppress appetite in the brain.
“When you take an antihistamine, you’re blocking that effect, which may make you feel hungrier than usual. Over time, that can lead to increased calorie intake without you even realising it.”
Histamine triggers allergy symptoms but also plays a key role in regulating hunger and wakefulness.
By interfering with this process, antihistamines – including both older sedating types like Piriton and newer options such as Benadryl Allergy Relief, Piriteze and Clarityn – may subtly alter eating habits.
Older medications can also cause drowsiness, reducing physical activity and further contributing to weight gain.
Research suggests the link is more than coincidence.
One study found children taking antihistamines saw their BMI rise by an average of 1.17 points per year, while another found adults using the drugs tended to have higher body weight and insulin levels.
However, experts stress the effect is complex and varies between individuals.
Dr Wyllie said: “Weight and allergies appear to be linked in a two-way relationship.
“It’s important to look at the bigger picture rather than blaming a single medication.”
She added that antihistamines remain safe and effective – but lifestyle tweaks may help balance their effects.
Dr Wyllie said: “Food isn’t a replacement for medication, but certain nutrients can help your body respond more calmly to allergens.”
Experts suggest adding anti-inflammatory foods like ginger, turmeric and oily fish, while citrus fruits and apples may offer natural antihistamine benefits.
They say a combined approach – rather than relying on pills alone – is key to managing symptoms without unwanted side effects.
