A woman is mortified by her husband’s “cringe” historical baby name ideas for their twin sons.
The mother has joked her husband is taking the “thinking about the Roman Empire” meme to another level, and she’s absolutely not on board with his suggestions for their baby boys.
She wrote on Reddit: “My husband wants to name our twins Romulus and Remus… Please no.
“He’s taken the ‘thinking about the Roman Empire’ thing way too seriously.
“We CANNOT name our sweet babies Romulus… or Remus. Ugh.”
In Roman mythology, the story of twin brothers Romulus and Remus is said to have led to the formation of Rome in Italy.
The brothers were abandoned and raised by a she-wolf, before being discovered by a shepherd.
Later, they argue over which hill their new city should be built on, and Romulus is said to have killed Remus as a result of the row.
There are other variations on the myth, with one suggesting Romulus arranged his brother’s execution rather than carrying it out himself, while others say one of Romulus’ supporters was the one to kill Remus.
Regardless of the myth itself, the woman is not happy with the idea of using it as inspiration for their own twins, and other Reddit users agreed.
One also pointed out: “Omg cringe – even if Ancient Rome is his greatest passion in life, this is so cringey I am embarrassed on his behalf.
“There are so many Roman names to choose from without being lame and goofy about it.
“Besides, if the Roman Empire really is his passion, then he’s centuries off because the Romulus and Remus story is from the founding of Rome, not the Roman Empire.”
Someone else joked that “their middle names can be Cain and Abel”, referencing the Bible story around Adam and Eve’s sons.
That story also ended in fratricide after Cain killed Abel, and a third user quipped: “Romulus Abel and Remus Cain so you never know which twin will kill the other.”
