A woman has revealed her name was effectively a typo after her parents spent so long arguing over it that they decided to keep a nurse’s mistake.
Cara, who shared her bizarre story on Reddit, said she had always believed her parents simply liked the sound of her name, but she later discovered there was much more to the story.
Her parents had narrowed their choices down to Claire and Clara but were still unable to agree after she was born.
Cara wrote : “They had narrowed their list to Claire and Clara and were still arguing after I was born.
“A nurse wrote ‘Cara’ on the little whiteboard beside the bed, apparently mishearing my dad.
“My parents looked at it, looked at each other, and decided the missing letters had solved the problem better than either of them could.”
Rather than correcting the nurse’s apparent mistake, the couple decided to stick with Cara.
The name then made its way onto the official paperwork, meaning what started as a misunderstanding became permanent.
But Cara did not discover the unusual origins of her name until she was 26.
She said: “I found this out at 26 because my mother casually mentioned ‘the Claire-Clara dispute’ and seemed surprised I had never heard about it.
“My carefully selected name was basically a typo with diplomatic immunity.”
Wanting to find out whether other people had similarly unusual naming stories, Cara asked Reddit users if their names had come from a misunderstanding, compromise or complete accident.
One user revealed their own baby-name compromise had produced the name Bennett.
They wrote: “My favourite name was Benjamin. My husband’s was Emmett. We now have a Bennett.”
Another shared how a childhood mispronunciation created an unusual family nickname.
They commented: “I’m Aunt Banana because my toddler nephew misheard Aunt Amanda and did the sign for banana in confusion. Someday, when I’m a grandma, I’ll be Grand Banana.”
A third user recalled discovering a bizarre error on her son’s birth certificate.
She said: “My son’s birth certificate had a bracket added into his first name, eg. Jona]than. I had to file to change it and get a new, official birth certificate before he started kindergarten.”
