Ukraine reportedly considered renaming part of the contested Donbas region “Donnyland” in a bid to win support from Donald Trump.
The New York Times reports that the proposed name was suggested by a Ukrainian negotiator as a way to appeal to the former US president.
The idea, reportedly shared during discussions with US officials, emerged partly in jest as Russia insisted peace would require Kyiv to surrender the entire Donbas region, which includes Donetsk and Luhansk.
A Ukrainian negotiator reportedly created a mock green-and-gold flag and a national anthem for the fictional territory, though it remains unclear whether these were ever presented to US envoys.
Russia claims full control of Luhansk, while Ukraine still holds parts of Donetsk, including key cities such as Kramatorsk and Sloviansk.
President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned that conceding the region could embolden Preident Vladimir Putin to pursue further territorial gains.
“Donnyland” has reportedly continued to feature informally in talks between US and Ukrainian officials.
It has been suggested the area could become a demilitarised or free economic zone via President Trump’s Board of Peace.
