A nine-year-old boy allegedly spent more than $100,000 promoting his Minecraft and Roblox videos online after discovering his father’s saved company payment details.

Dave, the father behind the Mighty Mike Plays YouTube channel, said his son Mike had been trying to grow his gaming channel when the huge advertising bill was eventually discovered by his employer.

According to Dave, the channel began as a simple project for his son to share gameplay videos with friends and other gamers.

The dad said he initially helped Mike create a small $20 YouTube advertising campaign after the youngster became frustrated that his videos were not attracting enough views.

Dave explained that he showed his son how to set a budget, choose an audience and launch the promotion.

However, he said Mike later returned to the advertising tools and began creating campaigns himself after seeing how the system worked.

“He didn’t really register that was supposed to be some kind of limit in his head,” Dave said. “The logic was simple, I guess. More money, more views.”

Dave said the problem started because his company card had previously been saved to the Google account linked to his work email, calendar, files and payment information.

The father claimed he was later called into a meeting with his manager, company representatives and finance staff, where he was shown a breakdown of advertising charges from the previous three weeks.

He said the company card had been used for $118,000 worth of campaigns linked to videos featuring titles such as “Mighty Mike”, “Epic Roblox” and Minecraft gameplay.

Some of the promoted videos reportedly reached around 200,000 views, but Dave said he had not yet been told whether he would need to repay the money or whether his job was at risk.

He stressed that he did not believe his son understood the seriousness of the spending, but admitted he was responsible for leaving payment details accessible without restrictions.

The family now plans to remove saved payment information, add spending limits and introduce parental controls.

Dave also suggested the Mighty Mike Plays channel could be paused while the situation is reviewed.

The nine-year-old appeared to take the situation in good humour, telling viewers: “I’m definitely cooked.”

Dave’s account, including the $118,000 figure and any response from the company involved, has not been independently verified.
