Women are romantically attracted to men who look like their brothers.
Researchers from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology analysed over 40,000 interactions on a popular dating platform, using AI tools to measure both facial features and personality traits.
The findings revealed that women tend to favour men whose facial features resemble those of their brothers.
While the exact reason remains unclear, the researchers point to the “parental investment theory,” which suggests that women prioritise trustworthiness and familiarity when selecting a partner. Facial resemblance may serve as a heuristic, helping them feel more secure in their choice.
Interestingly, men, on the other hand, prefer women whose faces are dissimilar to their own. This aligns with evolutionary theory, which suggests that attraction to dissimilar faces helps avoid the risks of inbreeding and promotes genetic diversity.
When it came to personality traits, socio-economic status (SES) played a significant role in attraction.
Women rated high-status men more favorably when their personalities aligned, while men were less inclined to favour high-status women with similar traits.
This suggests a “status imbalance,” where traditional gender roles influence partner preferences.
In summary, the study suggests that while physical attraction is influenced by familiarity, social factors such as status can also significantly impact romantic preferences.
