The Loch Ness Monster has reportedly been caught on camera after experts warned the fabled beast could be dead.

American tourist Nickolas Weigand visited the infamous site in Scotland in May and he is convinced he may have had a close encounter with Nessie after reviewing his footage from the trip and spotting a “mysterious” object in the water.

Nickolas – who was filming the loch on his camera during a bus tour – couldn’t explain the strange sighting so he made a report to The Official Loch Ness Monster Sightings Register, telling the organisation: “At the time of the filming, I was only looking through the viewfinder of my camera rather than the lake itself.

“We were driving at a pretty fast rate down the roadway directly next to Loch Ness. Because our tour was limited on time, I did not have time to watch my recorded footage until after the tour was over.

“After careful review of the footage, I discovered something mysterious and unknown deep in the water quite far away from shore.”

He added: “In the footage and in the still photographs I captured from the video, you can clearly see a dark image of something breaking the water surface as we drove by.

“The object is relatively large, gauging the distance from where we were on the bus to the distance of the water, using road signs on shore to gauge what was the size of whatever was in the water.”

The sighting comes after experts warned a lack of sightings could mean Nessie may have met her death.

According to the Daily Star newspaper, Rob Long, from the Loch Ness Exploration [LNE] team said: “There is a real fear for her as it normally is not this long that we go without a single glimpse.

“Normally people from our team will see her but so far, none of us have. Others have claimed to but we have not seen waters this quiet.

“The viewings have gotten less over the years, but never this scarce for us. Despite the lack of viewings, 2024 was the year we got the most definitive proof that Nessie exists – with the sonar recordings among the best we have ever got.”

He went on to add: “So although the viewings were scarce, they were of better quality. Now there’s nothing.

“Nessie has been there, we all know it, but she is clearly getting wise to people looking for her. We also think she is being put off from additional activity in the loch, such as people wanting to try cold water swimming.”

The LNE is a group of volunteers who scour the loch for any signs of Nessie and although sightings are down, the team isn’t giving up hope of finally proving the monster’s existence.

The LNE recently launched a new high-tech boat which will allow the crew to hunt for Nessie at night.
